Monticiano Town
Monticiano is a little known town of about 1500 residents, approximately
45 minutes drive from Siena and 90km from the coast (Castiglione della
pescaia). Although the town is not large it is a pretty typical Tuscan
town with an old stone center. Being off the main tourist routes it has
also kept some of its old charm and typical character without the high
prices found in the tourist towns and villages of other areas of Tuscany.
The area is highly prized by the locals for its mushrooms, chestnuts and
hunting in the respective seasons. During the mushroom season you will
often see the locals geared up with baskets and walking shoes on their
way to search for the prized porcini mushroom. Early in the mornings
during the hunting season you will find groups of locals with their dogs
ready to spend the day hunting for the wild boar or other Tuscan animals
depending on which season is open.
Walking
